DECEMBER 3--The Colorado woman who attacked her boyfriend when he refused to stop singing Macklemore’s “Thrift Shop” is the subject of an arrest warrant issued after she failed to comply with probation terms imposed as part of a plea deal, according to court records.
Samantha Malson, 24, was arrested in April for harassment and domestic violence following a drunken confrontation with her boyfriend Lars Hansen.
According to a Longmont Police Department report, Malson, a certified nursing assistant, told cops that she and Hansen, 26, had been “fighting all evening over the fact that Hansen accused Malson of consuming all the alcohol in the house.” At one point, Malson “began to listen to Macklemore’s song ‘Thrift Shop,’ which Hansen was singing while laying on the couch.”
Hansen, Malson told officers, sang the lyrics "over and over." After asking him to stop “25 times,” Malson admitted that, “I grabbed him around the throat.” She added, “He just annoyed me.”
Malson (pictured above) subsequently pleaded guilty to misdemeanor harassment and was placed on probation for up to 18 months, ordered to pay court costs, and sentenced to a 60-day suspended jail term. A Boulder County Court judge also directed Malson to undergo alcohol and domestic violence evaluations.
Court records show that, six weeks ago, a judge signed a bench warrant for Malson’s arrest for failure to comply with probation terms (this alleged violation is not further described). When arrested, Malson will have to post a $500 bond to secure her release from custody.
“Thrift Shop,” a collaboration by the rapper Macklemore (real name: Ben Haggerty) and Ryan Lewis is one of the year’s biggest selling singles. The corresponding video (seen below) has been viewed more than 462 million times on Lewis’s YouTube channel. (4 pages)
