The United States attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia filed this sentencing memorandum today (5/6), standing by its plea agreement to not seek the death penalty against convicted FBI spy Robert Hanssen. The memorandum, filed by U.S. attorney Paul McNulty, noted that while Hanssen participated in 75 interviews with law enforcement representatives over a 10-month period, those officials had "serious reservations about the defendant's candor and cooperation." But, according to the memorandum, it "would not be in the national security interest of the United States to abrogate the plea agreement and put Hanssen on trial." (3 pages)
