Police: Couple Engaged In Gravesite Sex
Duo was discovered trysting in historic Florida cemetery
APRIL 1--A couple was caught having sex atop a gravesite in a historic Florida cemetery, according to police who reported finding methamphetamine, Xanax, and Oxycodone in a nearby vehicle used by the duo.
As detailed in a Florida Highway Patrol report, officers on Wednesday afternoon spotted a white Nissan parked in front of the locked Wild Cow Prairie Cemetery “with the windows down and no one in the immediate area.”
The Sumter County cemetery has several dozen marked and unmarked graves dating back to 1850. In 2021, the cemetery was added to National Register of Historic Places.
At the rear of the cemetery, investigators observed “a white male and female...engaged in sexual activity on top of unknown grave #43.”
Cops identified the alleged grave bobbers as Joseph Luke Brown, 38, and Stephanie Kay Wegman, 46. Both suspects (seen above) live in separate residences in Webster, a Sumter County city.
A subsequent search of the Nissan--which is registered to Wegman and her husband (who is not Brown)--discovered meth on the passenger seat. Inside Wegman’s purse were “two prescription bottles with the labels missing” that contained Xanax and Oxycodone.
Wegman was arrested on multiple drug charges and booked into the county jail, where she is being held without bond. Brown was transported from the cemetery to a local hospital due to a “preexisting injury” to his leg. “A warrant will be sought for Mr. Brown,” troopers noted, though it is unclear what charges he will face.
In addition to the new counts, Wegman has two other pending cases. In September 2024, she was arrested for possession of meth, marijuana, and fentanyl. Last month, she was busted for possession of drug paraphernalia.
Brown has an extensive criminal history, with convictions for burglary; grand larceny; battery; domestic violence; larceny; reckless driving; meth possession; DUI; and possession of drug paraphernalia. In 2019, a Florida judge described Brown as a “habitual felony offender.”
Brown, who has served several prison stretches, was last released from state custody in May 2024. He is reportedly living in a mobile home purchased last year by his parents. (2 pages)
