Face Behind The Hook: Meet Radical Islamic Cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri, Accused Terrorist
After being extradited last week from Britain to the U.S.--where he has been indicted on federal terrorism charges--radical Islamic cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri posed for this United States Marshals Service mug shot.
The booking photo was released in response to a Freedom of Information Act request.
A federal indictment accuses the 54-year-old preacher--who will be tried under the name Mustafa Kamel Mustafa--of advocating jihad in Afghanistan, plotting to take hostages, and providing support to al-Qaeda.
Mustafa is being held in advance of trial, now scheduled for August 2013 in U.S. District Court in New York. Prior to his deportation, Mustafa had been locked up since May 2004, when he was arrested by British authorities.
Mustafa is missing his left eye and both hands (he was reportedly injured by a landmine in Afghanistan in the 1980s). Citing possible danger to jail personnel, Bureau of Prisons officials have removed a metal hook from the cleric’s right hand.
