Uniformed Boy Scout Executive Is Busted
DUI rap could lead to loss of driving badge
MARCH 9--A Florida Man arrested while wearing his Boy Scout uniform could have his motoring badge suspended following his collar Monday night on drunk driving charges.
Responding to a 911 call about a suspicious vehicle parked on a dead-end street in Deltona, a central Florida city, police found John Burke, 39, at the wheel of a 2021 Kia Soul. Burke, an officer noted, was surrounded by “numerous alcoholic beverage containers.”
Burke, an executive with the Central Florida Council of the Boy Scouts of America, told an officer that he was having marital difficulties and “wanted to take a drive.” As seen above, Burke was still in his Boy Scout uniform when contacted by police around 11:15 PM.
After a patrolman spotted multiple “indicators of impairment,” a wobbly Burke agreed to a series of field sobriety tests (for which he performed poorly). A breath test revealed Burke to be more than three times over the .08 legal limit.
Burke was arrested on DUI and open container charges and booked into the Volusia County jail, where he remains locked up in lieu of $1000 bond. He is scheduled for arraignment on March 11. (2 pages)
